Samuel Colt patented the design of the Paterson on February 25, 1836, in the United States, France, and England.  It derived its name from being produced in Paterson, NJ. It was the first commercial repeating firearm to employ a revolving cylinder with multiple chambers aligned with a single, stationary barrel. Initially this 5-shot revolver was produced in .28 caliber, with a .36 caliber model following a year later. True to the original design, Pietta's reproduction of the Paterson does not include a loading lever with the revolver; and, the cylinder does not have a bolt ramp.  Additionally, the trigger is concealed in the frame until the hammer is pulled back.
